چکیده

Glutaric acid has been shown to be an intermediate in the mammalian catabolism of lysine (1). Two routes have been proposed for the degradation of glutaric acid (2-5). One pathway yields acetate, and the other involves a direct conversion to the carbon chain of ac-ketoglutarate. In an effort to assess the relative importance of each pathway, we have studied the metabolism of glutaric acid-3-Cl4 in intact rats. The labeling patterns found in isolated glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and alanine are not compatible with a conversion to the carbon chain of cY-ketoglutarate and indicate that glutarate is metabolized exclusively via acetate.

THE METABOLISM OF GLUTARIC ACID-3-Cl4 BY THE INTACT RAT*

The Metabolism of Glutaric

Glutaric acid has been shown to be metabolized in part to acetoacetate and acetate in the rat, most probably by way of butyrate or acetonedicarboxylate (1). In addition, it was pointed out that part of the glutaric acid might also be converted to a-ketoglutarate by a more or less direct pathway. Study of the metabolism of lysine-6-Cl4 (2) has since provided substantial evidence in favor of this...

The metabolism of the methionine carbon chain in the intact rat.

In the present experiments the metabolism of the carbon chain of methionine has been studied in the intact rat by the administration of 2-, 3-, and 4-C14-nL-methionine. The distribution of Cl4 in liver glycogen, serine, choline, and aspartic acid has been determined. The results are consistent with the metabolism of Dand n-methionine largely over the pathway of propionic acid catabolism and exc...

Ascorbic Acid Synthesis from D-Glucose-%C1* in the Liver of the Intact Rat

Evidence that glucose1 is the ultimate g-carbon precursor of ascorbic acid in the rat was first obtained by Jackel, Mosbach, Burns, and King (1). They administered uniformly labeled glucose-C** to Chloretone-treated rats and recovered uniformly labeled ascorbic acid from the urine. Subsequently, Horowitz, Doerschuk, and King (2) and Burns and Mosbach (3) discovered that when glucose-l-C14 was a...

Acetoacetate and acetate, intermediates in glutarate catabolism.

The labeling patterns found in tissue glutamate, aspartate, and alanine after administration of glutaric acid-3-Cl4 to male rats (1) indicated that the major catabolic route of glutarate is via acetate (2) and not via a direct conversion to the carbon chain of cu-ketoglutarate (3-5). In further studies on the metabolism of glutarate-3-C14 in rats, we have observed the formation of urinary acety...
